Gay Teen Suicide

A sad epidemic is  currently sweeping the United States: increasing reported cases of gay teen suicides. The last of them was Tyler Clementi, a young college student who jumped off a bridge after his roommate posted a video on the Internet, in which Clementi was allegedly having sex with a man.

Other reported cases speak of tragedies very similar to the Clementi suicide. In most cases, the suicides are due to the incredible weight of social pressures, teasing and harassment these teens faced as a result of their sexual identity. This wave of suicides has led to more introspection and discussion about the treatment and acceptance of gays in the United States. It is also a chilling reminder that today, years after repeated efforts by the gay community for equal and dignified treatment, unfortunately, there is still much to change.

In that spirit of change, a great project entitled “It Gets Better” was begun by Dan Savage. The aim of this project is to support gay children and adolescents, give them faith and confidence, and assure them that the future holds a better life. As part of the product an extensive Web page was created which features on which are hung many videos spreading the encouraging message. Apart from many celebrities that participated in this beautiful project, Barak Obama himself joined the initiative, despite not making any significant legislative changes with regard to gay equality. June this year marked the Gay Pride march in Milan, a demonstration in favor of gay rights.

Milan-Ajax

Posted by milanblogger | milan | Monday 22 November 2010 11:12 am

If you plan to rent apartments in Milan may know that it is said that the city has two cathedrals. One, of course, is the magnificent Duomo and the other the majestic San Siro.

milan ajax
On December 8th, a match of the Champions League between Milan and Ajax Amsterdam will take place on a field near one of these imposing cathedrals. If you are interested in football, and a raging imperialist, you might describe this as “the most noble and beautiful sporting event to take place on the continent,” like the author of the article.

This author noted that duels are exceptional, ecstatic and hallucinatory events, whose essence is nothing less than the suspension of the world and time. Some think he is exaggerating, though it may be correct that the Stadium Giuseppe Meazza, San Siro´s official name, will vibrate with the excitement of the crowd when these two teams, who between them have won a total of 11 European Cups, seven for Milan, four for Amsterdam, take the field.  They are two teams that have decisively marked the history of modern football. Both advocated total football; Ajax is known for its tactical innovations in the seventies and Milan for Arrigo Sacchi (an essential part of the backbone of a team that was made up, perhaps not entirely coincidentally, by three Dutch players from the school of Ajax: Rijkaard, Van Basten and Gullit).  Their game marked a before in the history of this sport. All teams are now in some way their heirs.

From a cross-section should also include football in the history of art, perhaps it would be possible to see this game as a rematch of pictorial styles, from the late Gothic and early Renaissance, precisely the date of construction of the Duomo as characterized in the Italian and Dutch paintings. Even though in the two squads there are players from many places, the names of a few players from both teams are reminiscent of some of the great masters.

As if this were not enough to maintain your interest in the fascinating matter at hand, the game is presented as decisive. After the first phase of the group stage, AC Milan and Ajax each have four points meaning this is a very important game.  Someone could loose! Someone could win! You will have to watch to find out who gets lucky.

Love in times of Globalization

Posted by milanblogger | milan | Wednesday 3 November 2010 11:14 am

One thing young single urbanites have in common is having to deal with an increasingly aggressive sentimental market. In European cities such as Barcelona, Berlin and Paris, where immigration is the norm and there is a large fluctuation among young adults, it seems almost impossible to find a stable social circle, and even more impossible to find a partner.

love globalization

The incessant flow of people, on the one hand, gives you endless possibilities to make new friends and experience intense adventures. However, in most cases, these fragile emotional ties are never consolidated. There is always someone who is leaving, whether for work or because they are just anxious to move along, live new experiences, meet new friends and see new places. The relations gathered along the way are captured in short and intense yet fleeting encounters.

On the other hand, this phenomenon is coupled with an evidently increasing commitment-phobia, which has made us a generation of  “bachelors” and “bachelorettes” par excellence. Maybe it’s caused by the disastrous relationships from our parents lived, a hectic lifestyle, high expectations, or simply fear of being hurt, but whatever the reason, it’s as if we have become immune to relationships.

However, studies show that happiness is linked to our ability to establish stable and lasting relationships. Love and commitment are central to our emotional and psychological health. But we, by contrast, still jump from fling to fling, some hoping to find someone, mostly by simple inertia.  We are looking for the ultimate fling. Love has seen better days, and we have never been more alone. We have bred a new individualistic and selfish species, full of lone wolves who have no one with whom to share their misdeeds. So how about taking a little time for love and cloying sentimentality. Rent apartments in Milan, the most cosmopolitan city in Europe, and let yourself fall in love.
