Greta Garbo, the mystery of style

Posted by milanblogger | milan | Monday 22 March 2010 12:50 pm

With no doubt, Greta Garbo is one of the most mysterious and intriguing of the Hollywood stars. For many, Garbo is remembered as the screen idol who shimmered on film, but was a recluse in real-life. Despite ruling the Silent Era and the Golden Age of Hollywood, she gave no interviews, signed no autographs, and answered no fan-mail. She decided to abandon Hollywood in the 1940’s and moved to New York, giving one of the most sound bites in history: ‘I want to be alone’. A lone, anonymous figure on the streets of New York, in famous belted trench-coat, that turned into fashion among women, low-brimmed hat and dark glasses, she was for years stalked by the paparazzi.

A shoes fanatic
In Milan, a destination for fashion, you can visit ‘La Triennale di Milano’, an exhibition by the Salvatore Ferragamo label, at the design museum. This showcases the film star’s never-before-seen collection of Ferragamo footwear and other designer pieces. ‘Greta Garbo, the mystery of style’, traces the connections between Ferragamo and the Swedish actress while also showcasing film costumes, rare garments and accessories from Garbo’s own wardrobe. The Divine was a true fan of Italian designer’s shoes and she once even bought 70 pairs in the same day.

A unique style
The exhibition analyses her wardrobe, the actress’s continuing transformation into a prominent on-screen style icon. The open ‘closet’ reveals a collection of dresses, camel coats, raincoats, hats and the trousers sewn by Watson, a tailor suggested to both her and Marlene Dietrich.

Garbo’s style and independence undoubtedly contributed to create a new alphabet of style, both on and off screen. ‘I walk alone because I want to walk alone’, she once said. Alone or not, she definitely walked in style, thanks to Ferragamo’s shoes.

You got time until April 4th, so hurry up and book on Apartments in Milan, an economical accommodation. The closet of one of the biggest Hollywood legends is waiting for you.

Will The Beckham Clan Be Moving To Milan?

Posted by milanblogger | milan | Friday 12 March 2010 12:41 pm

Rumours are rife that David Beckham, currently playing for AC Milan and living out of a luxury hotel suite in the city, could be buying some prime real estate in the area. George Clooney’s stunning villa on the shores of Lake Como is apparently up for sale, and the Beckham’s are first in the running to buy.

The stunning villa, located in Laglio just 39 miles away from Milan, would offer the Beckham’s the perfect family home. Right on the shore of Lake Como, the villa is home to no less than 30 rooms as well as its very own pool, tennis courts and even a private jetty, giving them the chance to hit the lake in style.

George Clooney bought the villa in 2002, but he’s said to have since become disillusioned with the media attention. He’s looking for a bit more privacy for both him and his TV presenter girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, which prompted him to put the property up for sale. Prices in the area have shot up since his arrival, and the villa is reportedly on the market for around 26 million Euros.

The Beckham’s first stayed at the villa as guests of George last year and immediately fell in love, both with the villa itself as well as the area. Becks has told friends that it would be perfect for his brood, being in beautiful, peaceful countryside yet still close to Milan, great for his football obligations as well as his wife’s shopping habits. As Victoria is currently still located in LA it would be the perfect chance to get the family back together, allowing David to concentrate on his football career with his family by his side.

Lake Como truly is a beautiful area, and it isn’t hard to see why the Beckham’s have fallen in love with it. Best of all, it’s close to the stunning city of Milan offering the best of both worlds – fabulous countryside with all the buzz of this fantastic city just a short drive away.

If you think a trip to Milan could be for you but you don’t have the budget for a 26 million Euro property, why not consider renting apartments in Milan instead? This could be the perfect way to see everything the area has to offer, and if you feel like seeing whether or not the Beckham clan is there yet simply head on over to Laglio to see for yourself. What could be better?

African, Latin American and Asian Milan Film Festival

Posted by milanblogger | milan | Wednesday 10 March 2010 11:50 am

For 20 years, the city of Milan has organized a unique film festival of African, Asian, and Latin American culture in Italy. This is an extraordinary event that leads us to discover new horizons in independent cinema, away from the blockbusters and commercial topics. From March 15th to the 21st, 80 movies and short films will be screened in five cinemas in the Lombardy capital, a temptation that nobody can resist.

Windows on the world

A festival that invites 50 countries from the southern hemisphere is not common. Thanks to this festival, every year Milan rewards those continents, from which cinema is least present in our cinematographic culture: Africa, Latin America and Asia. There are two traditional sections: “Windows on the World Competitions” where films and documentaries from the three continents participate; and two reserved for Africa: the Best Film Award and the Best Short Film Award.

Outside of the dark rooms, you can take advantage of the Festival Centre, a meeting point that has been set up for visitors to see exhibitions (dance…), have a coffee, to participate in workshops or to play games… all inspired by the cultures of these three continents.

Sport in African society

Moreover, this year South Africa hosts the Soccer World Cup, so the festival will also focus on the relationship between football and Africa. With the recent release of ‘Invictus’ in cinemas, we discovered that rugby was a means of union amongst the people from this country under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. The social role of football, women soccer players as well as the trafficking of young prodigies are some of the topics that reflect the latest on sport in Africa.

“Where is Africa?”

Some countries such as Uganda, Mali, Cameroon, Rwanda, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya and Mozambique shot videos that will be seen in Milan (these videos have already been presented at the African film festival in Rotterdam). The language will not be a problem since all films are subtitled in both English and Italian.

Take advantage of this event and travel to the Lombard capital and rent Apartments in Milan, good pricing and quality you’ll love.

Milan Sanremo Cup – historic cars parade

Posted by milanblogger | milan | Friday 5 March 2010 11:16 am

Close your eyes and imagine a red, sport car, running by the curves of a hill. It seems to be taken out of a futuristic painting: it is a convertible car with the driver behind the wheel wearing the typical pilot’s cap, a scarf around his neck and sunglasses to protect him from the wind. No odometer or digital tachometers, the dashboard is full of old clocks with needles! This is a race for vintage car lovers, certainly not for those who obtained a driver’s license to drive a car with automatic transmission.

Milan-Sanremo-Cup

The eighth edition of the Milan-Sanremo Cup will be held between March 12 and 14, 2010 and will count with the best vintage cars. The old glory marques like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche and Fiat will show us what they can do! Only cars built before 1973 can participate in the competition and in each car there can only be two participants, the driver and the navigator. In the previous editions the viewers could enjoy models like the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GTC 1932 Cesare Sala or the Ferrari 166 Inter Coupé Touring.

The opening parade and presentation to the public will be held on Friday March 12, 2010 in Piazza Duomo in Milan. The output will be held the next day and cross the Pavese, the Lomellina city and then direct to Sanremo, where all the participants should arrive about ten o’clock at night.

Are you passionate about cars, but you are also concerned about the harm they may cause to the environment? You may change your mind: the Milan-Sanremo Cup organizers are also sensitive to this issue.

Last year they did the flyers with recycled paper and the same for this 2010 edition. They will also calculate the amount of CO2 they’ll emit into the atmosphere with the cars and then it will be compensated by a forestation project in an area whose wealth is at risk plant.

You have no excuses: go now to Milan and admire these past glories that still capture strong emotions. You can also take advantage of its vast cultural and gastronomic offer. Rent the best Apartments in Milan and have a nice stay!
