When one thinks about Milan, places like the famous Duomo or La Scala come to mind, but for all the art lovers there is no more beautiful place in the city than the Brera Art Gallery. The Internationally renowned museum, the Brera Art Gallery together with the Fine Arts Academy was born from an idea by Maria Theresa of Austria in 1776 with an educational purpose. She had to gather an important collection of art works for her students. When Milan became the capital of the Italian Kingdom on Napoleon’s wishes, this place was transformed into a museum highlighting the most important paintings from all the territories conquered by the French Army.

The Brera museum, unlike other big museums such as the Uffizi, does not receive paintings from private collections, but from the state. This is a very special place that plays host to millions of visitors every year. But 2009 is a special year for this museum. Do you want to know why?

This year it celebrates its bicentenary because it was opened to the public in 1809 for Napoleon’s birthday. So 2009 is a very important year in Milan! On June 16th the program was presented. Many events and exhibitions have been celebrated to honoured the museum.
