When one thinks about Milan, places like the famous Duomo or La Scala come to mind, but for all the art lovers there is no more beautiful place in the city than the Brera Art Gallery. The Internationally renowned museum, the Brera Art Gallery together with the Fine Arts Academy was born from an idea by Maria Theresa of Austria in 1776 with an educational purpose. She had to gather an important collection of art works for her students. When Milan became the capital of the Italian Kingdom on Napoleon’s wishes, this place was transformed into a museum highlighting the most important paintings from all the territories conquered by the French Army.

The Brera museum, unlike other big museums such as the Uffizi, does not receive paintings from private collections, but from the state. This is a very special place that plays host to millions of visitors every year. But 2009 is a special year for this museum. Do you want to know why?

This year it celebrates its bicentenary because it was opened to the public in 1809 for Napoleon’s birthday. So 2009 is a very important year in Milan! On June 16th the program was presented. Many events and exhibitions have been celebrated to honoured the museum. The events will continue until the end of the year, and on August 15th an exceptional celebration honouring this historic event will be hosted.

As everyone knows, the Brera Art Gallery houses beautiful collections of ancient and modern art. This gallery is located at Via Brera 28, close to the downtown area of the city. Here you can admire such important works such as the San Franesco by Greco, The Last Supper, two portraits by Van Dyck and Rembrandt, the Death of Christ by Mantegna or Saint by Titian… There are numerous collections distributed in 30 rooms on the first floor, chronologically and geographically arranged.

The famous museum has been restored and it is divided into different rooms to facilitate the visiting of the collections. You can’t miss it ! It will be a wonderful experience to live, where you can see the works of the artists you have always dreamed of. Come to this charming city and visit the Brera Art Gallery and sleep in Apartments in Milan.
